Ashanti
Branch
Ashanti Branch began mentoring when he was 17 years old growing up in Oakland, CA. After participating in the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement Program (MESA), Ashanti attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study civil engineering. After working in Corporate America for 5 years the deeply rooted passion to educate took over and Ashanti returned to school to become a high school math teacher. In 2004, during his first year teaching math at San Lorenzo High School, Ashanti founded The Ever Forward Club to directly support the young men of color who were failing classes. In 2006 the program added support circles for young women.
Ashanti was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 2007 to teach math in India. This experience ignited in him a deeper trust that students who are held to high expectations, and provided with strong support, can achieve academic success regardless of the odds they face. Since 2009, Ashanti has worked with several rites of passage organizations to initiate young men along their journey to manhood and has supported over 50 young men to complete their initiation. Ever Forward hopes to be a part of the development of a Rites of Passage initiation for urban youth.
As Ever Forward celebrates its 10 year anniversary, the organization will be featured in a documentary from The Representation Project coming in 2014 called The Mask You Live In. The Organization is working to raise capital to bring the program to scale. In addition to his work with Ever Forward, Ashanti is currently the Assistant Principal at a middle school in Oakland, CA.
